Our Homeschool Room

We’re just about a week away from the start of our school year — yes, we’re one of those families. . . .the ones who just HAVE to get  a few extra weeks of summer in by starting school after Labor Day.

(although, I must admit that I’ve been getting pretty jealous of the posts/tweets from the August starters; it sounds like you all are having FUN!)

This past week I have taken advantage of the fact “The Grandparents” are in town; while they have played with the kidlets, I’ve been a busy bee, planning the Little Lady’s semester and reorganizing our school room.

Our school room was originally our dining room but, for our family, works so much better as our playroom/classroom.  It’s sooooo nice to have a room where all of the noisy toys and bouncy balls can go!

After a bit of repainting and organizing, here’s a glimpse of the results!

Our “desk” (children’s table from IKEA) and Mommy’s Time-Out Chair (for me, people, not the kids — it’s the perfect chair for sipping morning coffee).

Oops! Should have turned on the light for this pic.

Here’s a close-up of our “Circle Time” board — the items on this board will be reviewed (mainly through various little songs) first thing each morning.  The Alphabet Tree was an idea I found from Erica at Confessions of a Homeschooler; when I introduce a new letter to the Little Lady, the previous week’s letter will go on the tree (a la “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom”).

“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” — our theme for this school year!

This is the Bookcase/Toy Shelf I begged Hubby to make — I LOVE IT!  It has made storage and clean-up a breeze; I’m going to add picture labels to the bins/shelves to help the Little Lady as she starts assuming responsibility for cleaning her toys.

Mommy’s Command Center — this is where I’m storing all of our learning toys, puzzles, art supplies, and my curriculum/lesson planning binder.  We are going to try using a modified workbox system this year and they are over here too.

Miscellaneous supplies and manipulatives

That’s about it — and, now. . . . I’m officially ready!!!

Visiting from the Hip Homeschool Hop. Your classroom is so fun and organized, great job! As soon as I saw the palm tree, I thought “that would be great for ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,’” then I saw the next photo, lol. Hope your family has a great school year.

Hi, I am stopping over from the Hip Homeschool Hop…I LOVE your room! t’s very organized and just looks very inviting! I have to ask…that board with the daily squares…looks like it’s laminated? with velcro? I might be borrowing that idea! I love it!

Come on by!

Yes, I purchased laminating sheets (saving up for an actual laminating machine) to go over the individual pieces . .. and then used pre-cut velcro strips. I’m laminating our letters, color cards, shape cards, etc and attaching the soft end of the velco to those. Hopefully, this allows me to reuse everything again next year!

Hi! I just dropped by from Hip Homeschool Hop. We also will be starting school after Labor Day. I feel like we finish too early in the year if we start in August. Plus, it’s nice to go do things after all the public school kids go back. :) Have a great day!

What great shelves your husband made! I love the way you have the toys and learning materials so neatly organized on low shelves. Great job! Have a wonderful homeschool year! I found you through Hip Homeschool Hop.

LOL — well, I’m actually rethinking putting so many of the learning games/puzzles on the lower shelves; my toddler thinks it’s fun empty EVERY puzzle piece out over the floor. (sigh)

Looks Great!

I need to get ours finished so I can share pics.
